Author Chetan Bhagat has said the Pune murder case involving businessman Ketan Agarwal, who was allegedly killed by his fiancée Siya Goyal and her boyfriend Chetan Chaudhary, reflects deeper issues surrounding conservative family structures rather than simply a failed relationship.

In an interview with India Today, Bhagat argued that the central issue was the role of "shame" and social expectations in traditional business families. Referring to the police's claim that Chetan Chaudhary told investigators Siya did not want to elope because it would have damaged her family's reputation, he said this highlighted how some business families continue to exercise strong control over their children's personal choices, particularly regarding marriage, India Today reported.

Bhagat said the simplest course of action would have been for Siya to marry her boyfriend through legal means and inform her family afterwards. However, he noted that, according to the police's account, she did not call off the wedding because of concerns about bringing shame to her family. He argued that such attitudes reflected the conservative outlook prevalent in many business families.

The author also addressed criticism over his recent article, Why Siya Couldn't Say No to Marriage, which some social media users interpreted as an attempt to portray the accused as a victim. Bhagat clarified that the article was not intended to defend anyone and said those responsible should face punishment if found guilty.

He further argued that parents in many small and medium-sized business families often exert considerable influence over the personal decisions of their adult children. According to Bhagat, many second-generation heirs grow up without sufficient independence and find it difficult to challenge their parents, partly because they remain financially dependent on them.

At the same time, he maintained that financial dependence should not justify excessive parental control. Bhagat concluded that family expectations and the fear of social stigma had contributed significantly to the tragedy, adding that better communication could have prevented the situation.
