Centre to scrap government vehicles older than 15 years

New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that a draft notification has been issued proposing mandatory non-renewal of registration of government vehicles older than 15 years.

The proposed regulation, which aims to decongest the roads in the country, will be applicable from April 1, 2023.

With this notification coming into effect, it would be mandatory for buses and vehicles of corporations and transport departments to scrap vehicles older than 15 years.

Suggestions have been sought on the notification within 30 days, the ministry said.

Last week, the minister said all vehicles belonging to the Central government that has completed 15 years will be scrapped, and a policy to that effect has been sent to states.

"Yesterday, I signed a file under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all the vehicles of the Indian government which have completed 15 years will be scrapped. I have sent this policy of the Indian government to all the states. They should adopt this policy at the state level," The Minister said.

On September 14, he announced plans of having at least three registered vehicle scrapping facilities in every district of the country.

The vehicle scrapping policy which was issued previously, and applicable to all vehicles in the country came into effect on April 1, 2022.

Even before the scrapping policy was announced the Supreme court as well as National Green Tribunal barred the plying of 15-year-old vehicles in the country.
