BJP pitches ‘temple economy’ shift in UP ahead of 2027 polls
text_fieldsThe Bharatiya Janata Party has sharpened its political messaging in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, claiming it has transformed the state’s development focus from a “kabristan economy” to a “temple economy”.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking nine years of the BJP government, said around 1,500 temples have been developed or upgraded during his tenure. Targeting the Samajwadi Party, he said previous governments prioritised spending on graveyards, while his administration has focused on temple development.
Speaking in Gorakhpur, Adityanath highlighted projects such as the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the redevelopment of Kashi Vishwanath Dham and Maa Vindhavasini Dham, saying these reflect visible changes across the state. He added that government funds have been used for temple infrastructure without diverting allocations meant for other purposes.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh echoed the stance, claiming the state has moved towards a “Sanatan economy” centred on faith-based tourism. He said each Assembly constituency has seen the development of one to five religious or cultural destinations.
The government also cited a rise in tourism, stating that footfall increased from 23 crore in 2017 to 156 crore by the end of 2025, driven by projects in Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Mathura, and other religious sites.
The Opposition has criticised the narrative, but the BJP continues to highlight religious infrastructure and tourism as key achievements as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
