A bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Mangli village, Maharashtra, prompting authorities to declare a 10 km radius around the area as an 'alert zone.'

The Chandrapur district administration took swift action after laboratory tests detected the H5N1 avian influenza virus in poultry birds that died on January 25. In response, the District Disaster Management Authority has issued preventive measures to curb the virus’s spread.

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects birds but can occasionally spread to mammals, including humans. Among the various subtypes, the most concerning for human health are influenza A(H5N1) and influenza A(H7N9), which have been linked to previous outbreaks.

The symptoms of H5N1 bird flu can resemble those of seasonal influenza, but in some cases, the infection may lead to severe complications.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Some individuals may experience shortness of breath, gastrointestinal distress such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as pink eye (conjunctivitis). Additionally, a runny or stuffy nose may also be present.

Although bird flu primarily affects birds, human infections can occur in rare cases, usually through direct exposure to infected poultry or contaminated environments. People handling birds, such as farmers and poultry workers, face a higher risk of infection.

However, human-to-human transmission remains extremely rare.

With the presence of H5N1 in Maharashtra, it is essential to follow precautionary measures to minimise the risk of infection. Getting a flu vaccine can help lower the chances of severe illness. Practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and water after handling birds or being in poultry farms, is crucial. It is important to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and any animals exposed to avian influenza.

If flu-like symptoms develop after exposure to poultry, seeking medical attention immediately is advised. Additionally, ensuring proper cooking of poultry and eggs can help eliminate potential viruses and reduce the risk of infection.

Authorities in Maharashtra continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in affected areas to follow safety protocols.
