Bhopal imposes ban on begging; giving alms now punishable by law
text_fieldsBhopal: Authorities in Madhya Pradesh have imposed a complete ban on begging in the state capital, Bhopal, and warned of legal action against both beggars and individuals who offer them alms. This move follows a similar ban already in place in Indore district.
The order, issued on Monday evening by Bhopal District Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, was enacted under Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita. The directive cites concerns over the involvement of several beggars in criminal activities and drug addiction, particularly those seeking alms at traffic signals. Their presence has also been linked to an increased risk of road accidents, the order noted.
“The act of begging and offering alms is strictly prohibited across the entire Bhopal district,” the order stated. It further clarified that legal action will be initiated not only against individuals found begging but also against those who give alms or purchase goods from beggars.
Violators of the prohibitory order will face legal proceedings under relevant sections of the law, the administration warned.
To provide support for the displaced beggars, the administration has designated a shelter facility at the Community Health Centre in Kolar, Bhopal, as a dedicated beggar home for their accommodation.
Last year, the Indore district administration implemented a similar ban, prohibiting both begging and the act of giving alms to beggars.
