The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) expressed disapproval of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after the bill was introduced in the ongoing session of the Uttarakhand State Assembly.

Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, an Executive Member of AIMPLB, raised concerns about the 'uniform code,' questioning its nature if any community is exempted.

"As far as UCC is concerned, we are of the opinion that uniformity cannot be brought in every law, and if you exempt any community from this UCC, how can it be called a uniform code?" stated the AIMPLB member. He emphasised that there was no necessity for such a Uniform Civil Code.

Upon the presentation of the draft before the Assembly, AIMPLB's legal team plans to thoroughly examine it, determining the subsequent course of action. "After the draft is presented before the Assembly, our legal team will study this, and then the further course of action will be decided," added Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tabled the UCC bill in the state Assembly, leading to an adjournment of the House. The bill encompasses laws related to marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, and associated matters.

Congress MP Abdul Khaleque alleged that the attempt to implement UCC is a polarising move. "They bring up UCC to polarise, but it is not possible (to implement it)," stated Assam Congress MP Abdul Khaleque during an interview with ANI.

Simultaneously, the Assam government, inspired by the Uttarakhand UCC report's approval, is preparing to introduce a bill in the upcoming budget session to end polygamy in the state. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this decision on February 2, noting that a final decision on prohibiting polygamy is anticipated during the budget session.
