New Delhi : P Chidambaram, the former union minister, and his son Karti received regular bail on Wednesday in relation to corruption and money laundering cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Having previously granted anticipatory bail to the accused in the matter, the Delhi court accepted the bail bonds of * one lakh each for both cases and granted regular bail.

In a motion made through Arshdeep Singh, the accused sought relief after appearing before the court following summons issued after the court took cognizance of the charge sheets filed by the investigating agencies.

The court had earlier instructed the agencies to file a status report in the Aircel-Maxis case that was adjourned sine die.

It concerns alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board approval of the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Chidambaram was Finance Minister in 2006 when the approval was granted.

According to the CBI and ED, Mr Chidambaram had approved the deal beyond his authority, benefitting certain persons and receiving kickbacks.
