AIADMK opposes uniform civil code, reaffirms stance

Chennai: The AIADMK, a key ally of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has reaffirmed its stance against the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. Party chief K. Palaniswami emphasised that their position on the matter has already been clearly stated in the party's manifesto released for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Palaniswami addressed reporters in Chennai after chairing a meeting of the party's district secretaries, where he was asked about the BJP's push for the Uniform Civil Code and his party's stand. In response, he pointed to their manifesto, saying, "Read our manifesto, we have mentioned it clearly."
In the 2019 manifesto, under the topic of 'Secularism,' the AIADMK stated their opposition to amendments to the Constitution for a Uniform Civil Code that could potentially impact the religious rights of minorities in India.
When questioned about the continuation of the AIADMK's alliance with the BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Palaniswami stated that there was still time before the elections and there was no urgency to make a decision. He assured reporters that the party would reveal its alignment with other parties at the appropriate time, while emphasising that their position on the alliance with the BJP had already been communicated. Palaniswami emphasised that the alliance between the AIADMK and the BJP would follow the principles set by the party's founder, M.G. Ramachandran, and the late party matriarch, J. Jayalalithaa.
He reiterated that their ties with the BJP had been clearly established. Earlier this year, after meetings with top BJP leaders J.P. Nadda and Amit Shah in Delhi, Palaniswami had affirmed that the AIADMK's alliance with the BJP remained intact.
