Singhu border violence: Man who attacked SHO with sword, 43 others arrested

New Delhi: The Delhi police has arrested 44 people including the man who attacked SHO Alipur in the violence that broke out on Friday afternoon at Singhu border, one of the protest sites of agitating farmers.

"SHO Alipur, Delhi intervenes between rioting protestors (MKSC faction) and local Singhu villagers, who had gone to register their protest against the happenings on Republic Day-2021 and continued loss of ordinary livelihoods for over two months," the Delhi Police said in a tweet.

In another tweet, police said, "This is how the SHO was assaulted; he has suffered grievous injuries on his hand..Peace has been restored. Legal action is being initiated."

All the arrested have been charged with criminal cases under various sections including attempt to murder and obstruction of public servant has been registered in Alipur police station, Delhi and investigation has been initiated.

"Accused Ranjeet Singh, 22, a resident of Kazampur village in Punjab, who attacked SHO Alipur with sword has been arrested from the spot," a senior police officer said.

The situation at Singhu border deteriorated on Friday afternoon as villagers clashed with protesting farmers after one thing led to another and the mob was seen armed with lathis, swords and stones. A police officer among others was injured.

The group of people, who claimed to be from nearby villages also damaged protesting farmers' tents, demanding that the two-month old protest be called off and the site be vacated to open the border.

The heated arguments erupted violence in the border leading to stone pelting from both the sides. The situation was controlled an hour later.
