New Delhi: As India gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, industry experts predict the creation of approximately nine lakh temporary jobs across various roles due to the election process.

The elections commenced on April 19 with 102 constituencies spanning 21 states and Union Territories participating, and will conclude on June 1.

Kartik Narayan, CEO - Staffing at TeamLease Services, highlighted that these temporary positions will predominantly remain active until the culmination of the election process in each respective location. "With over a million polling booths across India, each booth is expected to employ at least 1-2 temporary gig workers for the duration of the electoral process," Narayan informed PTI.

Nilesh Dungarwal, CEO and co-founder of WorkIndia, shared insights on the diversity of roles encompassed by these temporary jobs. "Temporary jobs created during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections include positions like polling booth officials, election clerks, security personnel, data entry operators, transportation coordinators, and administrative staff," he said.

Dungarwal also noted the surge in specific job roles during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, such as accounting, data entry, security personnel, and content writing, among others.

Aditya Narayan Mishra, Director and CEO at CIEL HR, added that in the past six months, an estimated 2,00,000 temporary positions have emerged in various sectors vital for election preparation. "Roles span across data analysis, planning, public relations, market survey, media relations, content design, content marketing, social media marketing, AI strategies, and project management," Mishra elaborated.

Mishra further anticipated a significant increase in activities related to event management, printing, transportation, food and beverages, catering, security, IT network management, and analytics as the campaigning intensifies. He expects service providers to hire around 4,00,000 people temporarily for these projects.

Kartik Narayan also addressed concerns regarding the impact of these temporary jobs on the job market. He noted that while these jobs may transiently influence sectors that typically foster temporary employment, the impact is generally localized and short-lived. "Election-related operations usually unfold over a brief timeframe and do not substantially disrupt broader employment patterns within these sectors," Narayan explained.

R P Yadav, CMD of Genius Consultants, emphasized the need for a significant workforce of over 1,00,000 temporary workers to handle diverse tasks during the elections. These tasks include food catering, vehicle maintenance, schedule management, campaign material handling, and construction of meeting podiums and barricades.

Yadav also shed light on the remuneration for these temporary positions. "Individual workers may earn between ₹15,000-40,000 based on their role and scope of work involved. Additionally, drivers providing transportation services typically receive between ₹5,000-8,000 per day," he added.
