179 IPS officers transferred in major West Bengal Police reshuffle
text_fieldsKolkata: The West Bengal government on Monday ordered a major reshuffle in the state police administration, transferring 179 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in one of the largest administrative changes in recent times.
The notification includes around 12 Superintendents of Police (SPs), among them officers posted in sensitive districts such as Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee.
According to the order, Surya Pratap Yadav has been removed as SP of Birbhum district and appointed Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Kolkata Police.
Jalpaiguri SP Amarnath K. has been promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Intelligence Bureau, North Bengal.
Purulia SP Vaibhav Tiwari has been appointed Joint Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) in Kolkata Police, while Barasat Police District SP Pushpa has been transferred to East Burdwan.
Bankura SP Saumaditya Bhattacharya has been posted to the Malda Special Task Force (STF), and South Dinajpur SP Chinmoy Mittal has also been transferred.
Hooghly Rural SP Kumar Sunny Raj has been given charge of Purulia, while Baruipur Police District SP Shuvendra Kumar has been posted to the Wireless Branch of Kolkata Police.
Diamond Harbour Police District SP Ishani Pal has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South-West Kolkata.
In the State Special Task Force, DIG Sudhir Kumar Neelakantam has been appointed Inspector General (IG) of the Counter Insurgency Force (CIF) of West Bengal Police. STF Superintendent Parijat Biswas has been shifted to the Enforcement Branch.
Kolkata Police Armed Police Joint Commissioner Subhankar Bhattacharya has been appointed DIG (Traffic).
The large-scale transfers come at a time when the state police administration is intensifying action against illegal activities. The reshuffle also follows ongoing investigations involving several Trinamool Congress leaders facing allegations of corruption and extortion, with multiple party MLAs, former ministers, and councillors already arrested in related cases.
