The first thing that comes to our mind when we think of Kodaikanal is the scenic beauty of its misty hills. But, this video will tell you another story.

It was in 1982 the Hindustan Unilever Limited had set up a thermometer factory in Kodaikanal. But, it was the beginning of a tragic story. Kodaikanal mercury poisoning has now been a well-chronicled case of toxic pollution. The unit was shut down on March 7, 2001, after a spate of protests.

Even after 14 years since Anglo-Dutch multinational company Unilever was forced to shut down, studies say tonnes of hazardous mercury waste continue to lie scattered around the unit compound in Kodaikanal.

The victims are seeking justice.

Written by Chennai-born rapper Sofia Ashraf, this video takes an undisguised jab at Unilever for its failure to clean up mercury contamination or compensate workers affected by its thermometer factory in Kodaikanal.
