India re-elected to International Maritime Organization council with highest vote count

India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in Category B for the 2026–27 term.
Category B consists of 10 countries that have the largest stake in global seaborne trade.
The announcement was made on Friday through an official statement.
India received 154 out of 169 valid votes, the highest tally in its category. The Council elections took place on Friday in London during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly. Voting was conducted through a secret ballot.
“The term of Council will be for the 2026-27 biennium,” the statement said. It added that “India secured the large-scale support of the international community at the International Maritime Organisation for India to continue to serve the global maritime domain.”
The IMO Council has 40 elected members chosen from its 176 member states. They are divided into three categories, and the Council handles responsibilities between sessions of the IMO Assembly.
On the sidelines of the 34th Assembly, the Indian delegation also held discussions with other country delegations, international bodies, and IMO officials. These meetings focused on areas of shared interest.
