Centre directs Twitter to comply with government orders by July 4
text_fieldsNEW DELHI: An Official on Wednesday said that the government has issued a directive to Twitter to conform with all previous orders by July 4.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT said that failure to comply with the orders by July 4 will result in the social media losing its intermediary status and be responsible for all comments posted on its platform.
"A notice was issued on June 27 to Twitter to comply with all government orders issued till date. Twitter was issued notices earlier this month but it did not comply with it. This is the final notice," a government source said.
There was no immediate response to an email query sent to Twitter. Twitter has been at odds with the government on several occasions.
On June 26, Twitter submitted a list of more than 80 accounts and tweets that they blocked in 2021 at the request of the government. The government's request was to block multiple accounts and some tweets from the international advocacy group Freedom House, journalists, politicians and supporters of the farmers' protest.
However, government sources said that there are several other orders that Twitter has yet to comply with and that a deadline of July 4 has been set for compliance.
