Trump confused over announcing candidacy next week, advisors scratch their heads
text_fieldsA section of advisors to the former US President Donald Trump is undecided over announcing his 2024 presidential campaign next week after Republican candidates endorsed by him failed in the midterm elections.
While some of his staffers are favouring him in quickly announcing a campaign, a large number of others suggest delaying it until after the Senate runoff in Georgia in December, according to The Guardian.
Trump is facing blame from Republican ranks for "underwhelming performances" of candidates he endorsed, especially that of Republican candidate Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania whose defeat caused uncertainty over which party will control the Senate.
Despite his public declaration of running for White House next week, uncertainty looms in his circle even after some invites have been sent to attendees to the "special announcement" event.
The report based on inputs from sources said that some of Trump's staffers pressed him to go ahead with campaign as planned on Tuesday. They reasoned that otherwise he would appear "weak" and "wounded" by the results.
Meanwhile, a growing chorus of informal advisors urged him to hold off the announcement until the Senate runoff and then decide on announcing his candidacy "based on how votes break down in Georgia", according to the report.
The Trump camp is facing chaos after Republican candidate Herschel Walker, handpicked by Trump, got 35,000 votes fewer than Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock in the general election.
Walker's poor performance led to the advice of delaying his candidacy because delaying would give him time to assess the results of the Arizona and Nevada Senate races.
After "itching for weeks" to start his presidential campaign, Trump heeded to the advice of wait until after the midterms to make the announcement, according to the report.
Unable to hold off anymore, Trump gave away the hint of "very big announcement" last Saturday to take place a week after election night.
