Taliban publicly flogs, cuts off hands in a Kandahar stadium: report
text_fieldsKandahar: A spokesperson for Taliban said nine people convicted of robbery and sodomy were lashed 35-39 times publicly in Kandahar on Tuesday.
The spectacle took place at Ahmad Shahi Stadium with local authorities and Kandahar residents were in attendance during the lashing.
Another more grievous report says that the hands of four people were cut off in a football stadium after a kangaroo court of Taliban handed out the punishment.
Shabnam Nasimi who is a former Policy Advisor to Minister for Afghan Resettlement & Minister for Refugees in the UK, revealed the chopping of the convicts’ hands.
"The Taliban have reportedly cut off the hands of 4 people in a football stadium in Kandahar today, accused of theft, in front of spectators. People are being lashed, amputated & executed in Afghanistan, without fair trial and due process. This is a human rights violation," Shabnam Nasimi reportedly tweeted.
"The Supreme Court said in a statement that nine people were punished in Ahmad Shahi Stadium in Kandahar on Tuesday on charges of robbery and 'sodomy'", tweeted Tolo News.
Paying no attention to the international condemnation, the Taliban regime started to deal out crude punishments including flogging and chopping of hands for relatively mild crimes like stealing silly objects.
Reports say that people, especially women and girls, are severely punished for perceived illegitimate and extramarital relationships.
UN authorities are reportedly aggrieved about a public execution and flogging happening in Afghanistan after Taliban returned to power.
In a widely reported incident on December 7, 2022, a man was publicly executed in Farah city, Farah province.
The execution is believed to be the first case since Taliban seized power in August 2021.
Meanwhile UN experts reportedly said that since November 18, 2022, over 100 individuals, both women and men, were flogged in places like Takhar, Logar, Laghman, Parwan and Kabul.
Each person was subjected to between 20 and 100 lashes for alleged crimes including theft, 'illegitimate' relationships or violating social behaviour codes, the statement said.
Most of those who were put to punishment included women and girls over relationships.
The flogging takes place in stadiums in the presence of officials and members of the public, the experts reportedly said.
Afghanistan is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention against cruel degrading punishments.
