Press Freedom weakening in India: Rahul tells US media at an event

Washington DC: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday told journalists in Washington DC that press freedom in India was under attack.

Rahul Gandhi has again risked being accused of tarnishing India on foreign soil when he said back home there was a clampdown on the institutional framework.

Rahul Gandhi previously told a gathering in California that PM Modi among some people in India believe they know more than God.

During the free-wheeling conversation at National Press Club in Washington DC, Rahul Gandhi opened up that press freedom is critical for democracy, and one should be open to criticism, according to NDTV.

He further alleged a clampdown on the institutional framework, which he said helped Indians negotiate between different cultures, languages and histories.

‘ I view India as a negotiation between its people, between different cultures, languages and histories. Mahatma Gandhi set up the framework to enable that negotiation fairly and freely. That structure, which allows this negotiation, is coming under pressure,’ he said.

Gandhi also said that people he interacted with during his walk across the nation told him there were serious issues such as inflation.

Rahul Gandhi’s comments triggered a backlash from the BJP alongside accusing the leader of tarnishing India's image on foreign soil.
