Rawalpindi: Rawalpindi police have registered a case against journalist Waqar Satti for allegedly attributing "disrespectful" statements about Islam to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A cable operator Chaudhry Nasir Qayyum, according to the first information report (FIR), complained to the police that he came across a tweet by Waqar Satti explaining why he "hates" Imran Khan and reasons of him going against the former prime minister, according to Asian News International.

The FIR recorded the complainant as saying that Imran Khan had not said any such words mentioned in Waqar Satti's tweet - in any of his speeches.

Nasir Qayyum added Satti's actions had hurt his and thousands of other Muslims' religious sentiments.

Waqar Satti faces Sections 295-A and 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Meanwhile, a senior journalist was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Saturday in the Toba Tek Singh province of Pakistan's Punjab.

Muhammad Younis was riding motorcycle to his farmland at Mouza Manganwala when two men hiding in a field opened gunfire, according to Dawn.

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has ranked Pakistan the fifth most dangerous place to practice journalism with attackers mostly going unpunished.

Between 1990 and 2020, 138 media persons in the country lost their lives during work.
