At least twenty people, including children, were killed and 65 others injured after a metro overpass partially collapsed in Mexico City on late Monday, according to local authorities.

Rescue efforts are underway searching for potential survivors after a crane was brought in to support the overpass that was about 16 feet above the road, local media reported. Rescue operations had to be paused for some time after the accident, fearing another collapse.

CCTV footage circulated via local channel showed the metro's Line 12 collapsing which then forced train cars to crash one-over-another onto a street near Olivos station, filling up the area with a cloud of dust and rubbles. Initial reports convey that as the train movement was above a concrete median strip, it reduced road casualties to some extent, according to AP.

There were still people trapped inside the train but it was unclear if they were alive, said Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum adding that a support beam gave way as the train passed over it.
