More permanent members in UNSC might lead to paralysis, says Pak

Pakistan on Tuesday opposed the efforts by India, Brazil, Germany and Japan for permanent seats in the United National Security Council (UNSC).

There is no justification for creating new centres of privilege within the UN, said Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN.

"Any country seeking a more frequent presence on the Security Council should do so by subjecting itself to the democratic process of periodic election by the General Assembly," Munir maintained.

Munir referred to the Italy/ Pakistan-led Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group and said that the group remains opposed to proposals for permanent membership for individual member states. The group had pled an expansion of the 15-member council in the two-year, non-permanent category. The UfC believes that its proposal for a comprehensive reform of the UNSC is the best basis for a compromise, he added. Considering the inability of permanent members to agree on decisive action, more permanent members would only increase the chances of inaction, the report said.
