Khamenei warns US of regional war if Iran attacked
text_fieldsIran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned the United States that any attack on Iran would spark a “regional war,” as President Donald Trump deploys military assets in the Middle East. Speaking to supporters in Tehran on Sunday marking the 1979 revolution anniversary, the 86-year-old leader accused the US of seeking to seize Iran’s oil and gas reserves.
Khamenei likened recent nationwide protests—which began over economic woes including currency collapse, corruption, energy shortages, and sanctions—to a failed coup attempt. He claimed protesters targeted police stations, government buildings, IRGC facilities, banks, mosques, and even burned Qurans, calling it another “sedition” like the 2009 Green Movement. Iranian state media reported 3,117 deaths, blaming US- and Israel-backed “terrorists,” while UN experts and activists cite figures up to 20,000 amid an internet blackout.
Trump responded that he hopes for a deal with Iran, but if not, “we’ll find out whether or not he was right.” President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged to release victim names soon to counter “fake claims,” while a government text message announced women will soon ride motorcycles, easing some restrictions.
Hardline lawmakers chanted “Death to America” in parliament after the EU labeled the IRGC a terrorist group, prompting Tehran to blacklist EU forces. IRGC troops paraded in Tehran, renewing vows at Khomeini’s mausoleum ahead of February 11 rallies against “global arrogance.” Khamenei touted millions at pro-government events versus “thousands” of protesters, as state media continues airing programs condemning the unrest.
