In a demonstration of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, state lawmakers, and advocates for Palestinian rights have embarked on a five-day hunger strike outside the White House, urging a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.

This hunger strike, supported by progressive figures such as actor Cynthia Nixon, intensifies the growing demand for an immediate end to the Israeli war in Gaza.

The activists expressed deep concern over President Joe Biden's perceived support for the Israeli offensive in Gaza. They criticized Biden's unwavering backing of Israel, highlighting the devastating consequences in Gaza, where over 14,800 Palestinians have lost their lives.

The hunger strikers argue that the $14 billion in additional US aid pledged to Israel is exacerbating the violence, according to a report published on Al Jazeera.

At a news conference on Monday, the protesters emphasized that public opinion polls indicate widespread American support for a ceasefire. They called on President Biden to reconsider his stance, citing the urgency of the situation and the grave risk of genocide facing Palestinians, according to United Nations experts.

Cynthia Nixon, best known for her roles in "Sex and the City" and her involvement in progressive advocacy urged President Biden to empathize with the suffering of Palestinian children and pleaded for a continuation of the current ceasefire.

Nixon emphasized the need to negotiate a more permanent peace, insisting that the "Never again" principle should apply universally.

Delaware lawmaker Madinah Wilson-Anton, a Muslim American legislator, expressed anxiety about the hunger strike but emphasized that the majority of Americans support a permanent ceasefire. She urged President Biden and congressional members to be responsive to the desires of the American people.

New York State Representative Zohran Mamdani highlighted the success of negotiations in securing the release of captives during the truce. He underscored the hunger strikers' commitment to a world where everyone can be with their family, emphasizing that diplomacy, not war, can bring about reunification.

Activist Rana Abdelhamid drew attention to the link between the violence in Gaza and a rise in prejudice against Arabs and Muslims in the US. She cited a recent shooting of three Palestinian students in Vermont as evidence of the impact of anti-Palestinian rhetoric, urging an end to dehumanization.

Palestinian-American writer and advocate Sumaya Awad stressed the collaboration of the US in the ongoing violence against Palestinians. She highlighted the domestic ramifications of the conflict, emphasizing that it is not a distant issue but one that directly affects the lives of Americans.

As Israeli leaders hint at a possible resumption of bombing once the truce expires, the hunger strikers emphasize the power of diplomacy over military actions in resolving the crisis in Gaza.
