New York: Amidst recent incidents involving Indian students in the United States, former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi has offered valuable advice to Indian students residing in or planning to travel to the US.

In a video message shared by the Consulate General of India in New York, Nooyi emphasized the importance of vigilance and adherence to local laws for the safety of Indian students.

In the video, which spans over 10 minutes, Nooyi directly addressed Indian students, acknowledging the unfortunate situations some have faced and stressing the need for vigilance to ensure personal safety. She cautioned against activities that could lead to trouble, terming them as "formulae for disaster." Nooyi highlighted the risks associated with outings at night, drug use, and excessive drinking, urging students to exercise caution to avoid dire consequences.

Furthermore, Nooyi advised students to make informed decisions regarding their choice of university and course, recognizing the cultural adjustments and distancing from familiar support systems that studying in the US entails. She cautioned against hasty friendships and the allure of newfound freedoms, urging students to be mindful of their choices and habits.

In particular, Nooyi emphasized the dangers of drug experimentation, citing incidents of addiction among youngsters and the lethal nature of drugs like Fentanyl. She urged students to be aware of their visa status and abide by the law, emphasizing the importance of understanding the boundaries of their privileges as foreign students in the US.

Nooyi's message comes amidst a series of distressing incidents involving Indian students, including cases of missing individuals and tragic deaths.

She highlighted the educational opportunities in the US while cautioning against viewing studying abroad as a guaranteed pathway to employment, encouraging students to explore opportunities in India as well.

Encouraging students to utilize available resources and support networks, including university systems and local Indian communities, Nooyi emphasized the significance of prioritizing mental health and well-being. She stressed the value of staying connected and seeking assistance when needed, underscoring the importance of proactive safety measures for Indian students in the US.
