How Trudeaus popularity decline led to his resignation

On 5 January Justin Trudeau announced he would step down as Prime Minister of Canada. Monsieur Trudeau has held that office for nine years. He shall stay as PM until his Liberal Party can choose a new leader. That will be in March this year. Whomsoever the Liberals select as their leader will be the next PM.

During his premiership Tru,deau has ensured Canada had a healthy economy with steady growth, low unemployment and low public debt. Public services are functioning well. Canada has financially supported Ukraine as well as arming and training the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Justin Trudeau is restrained, measured, courteous and almost bland. Trudeau is a former teacher and is cerebral and thoughtful. The contrast between him and his neighbour’s leader Donald Trump could scarcely be greater. He is a French-Canadian and indeed English is his second language. But he has always opposed the secession of Quebec.

Trudeau was pressured into stepping aside because he was increasingly unpopular. His Deputy Prime Minister Christa Freeland resigned in December 2024 to protest at what she perceived as Trudeau’s mismanagement. This severely undermined Trudeau’s position.

Canada’s bid to decarbonise the economy has raised the cost of living. Truck drivers are deeply unhappy with it and staged protests blocking roads. Inflation has been climbing since 2022. COVID lockdowns under Trudeau were seen by many as too long and too severe.

Much of Canada’s economy depends on hydrocarbon exports. Having the world’s second largest land area the country is blessed with superabundant mineral resources. Its oil, gas and coal have helped Canada grow rich. Not everyone wants to switch away from those.

The Liberal Party is behind the Progressive Conservatives (Tories in the polls). An election is due at the end of 2025. The Tories are expected to win. But with a new PM, the Liberal Party might become more popular. They could still win.

Right-wing Canadians are aghast at Trudeau’s wokery. Under Trudeau, it became a crime to call a man ‘a man’ if the said male pretended to be a woman. It became possible to change one’s sex legally by filling in a single form. Trudeau constantly said that white Canadians had treated First Nations people abominably.

In 2024 Canada and India began a diplomatic spat. India had long accused Canada of harbouring Sikh terrorists. Canada is 10% ethnically Indian and about 3% ethnically Sikh. Some Sikh Canadians overtly approve of the Khalistan Liberation Force.

A KLF spokesman was shot dead in Vancouver in 2024. Ottawa accused the Government of India of orchestrating the slaying. New Delhi vehemently denied all involvement and said there was no evidence that it had any part in the shooting. Relations between India and Canada are in a deep freeze.

Trudeau said Canada’s intelligence service had informed him that India was behind it. Why would Trudeau or his intelligence service say it if it were not true? They could be simply mistaken. They might be driven by an anti-India agenda. They might calculate that such rhetoric looks tough and appeals to a segment of the electorate.

Once there is a new Prime Minister in place relations between Canada and India might ameliorate. They could scarcely get worse. But it is by no means guaranteed that there will be a thaw in Indo-Canadian relations. The next PM might persist with Trudeau’s policies.

Relations between the two Commonwealth countries were once very cordial. Trudeau visited India several years ago and was rapturously received. Canada has the largest land area in the Commonwealth of Nations and India has the largest population. They are the Commonwealth giants.

At 53 Trudeau could still have a political career ahead of him. He looks more like 33.

Justin Trudeau is the son of the man who served as PM of Canada in the 1970s. Justin is the only son of a Prime Minister to also become Prime Minister.
