New Delhi: Could China become the source of another wave of Covid 19, considering the number of covid cases in the nation?

Going by reports, it seems there is a chance. However, Chinese authorities have not yet shared the data on exact number of infections and deaths happening in the nation.

Officially China reported only 15 Covid deaths since it began loosening up restriction on December 7.

Reports however say that around 9,000 die a day from Covid, which makes Covid a boogeyman to be reckoned with.

Western media frequently reported that Chinese hospitals are overwhelmed by the increasing covid cases, so do crematoriums where the dead find no room.

The massive explosion in cases came after China decided to scrap zero-Covid policy following the Party Congress and subsequent public clamour to lift the restrictions.

In the wake of growing number of nations imposing travel restrictions on China, World Health Organisation sought from China data on genetic sequencing, hospitalisations, deaths and vaccinations.

Over 12 countries, including the United States, Australia, and Canada last week announced plans to impose testing restrictions on arrivals to check the spread of infection.

China reportedly admitted that the covid outbreak has become "impossible" to track after it gave up mass testing last month.

Alongside, the National Health Commission has stopped publishing daily nationwide infection and death statistics.

Meanwhile China is reportedly developing a national genetic database of covid samples sourced from hospital surveillance in order to help track mutations.

Health experts in China admitted that the Omicron subvariants BA.5.2 and BF.7 are most prevalent in Beijing, according to a report in India Today.
