Covishield gets UK approval after widespread criticism

New Delhi: The UK's new travel advisory has accepted SII's Covishield as an approved vaccine after widespread criticism over the recent advisory that recommended a 10-day quarantine for fully vaccinated Indians.

"Formulations of the four listed vaccines -- AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca vaxzevria and Moderna Takeda qualify as approved vaccines." said the new travel advisory that will be implemented from October 4 at 4 a.m.

"You must have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England" it added.

Further, the new travel advice said that mixed vaccines are only permitted if you are vaccinated under the UK, Europe, USA or UK overseas vaccination program, until October 4.

On the other hand, the UK government is "working with India to increase recognition of vaccine certification," according to a statement released by the UK High Commission on Tuesday. His statement was in reference to concerns in India concerning vaccination certification.

"The UK is committed to opening up international travel again as soon as is practicable and this announcement is a further step to enable people to travel more freely again, in a safe and sustainable way, while protecting public health. We are engaging with the Government of India to explore how we could expand UK recognition of vaccine certification to people vaccinated by a relevant public health body in India," said British High Commission spokesperson.

Amid widespread outrage against the UK for their 'discriminatory' travel policy, Dr Saumya Swaminathan, WHO top scientist, has stated that all governments should adhere to WHO guidelines. "EUL vaccinations are universally recognised, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). We expect all countries to follow our guidelines. They're only suggestions" she said.
