6.0 earthquake jolts Indonesia; no casualties or infrastructure damage
text_fieldsIndonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 near Indonesia's East Java island on Saturday, following a 6.7 magnitude tremor on the same day. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties and no severe infrastructure damage. No tsunami warnings were issued.
According to the BMKG, the 6.0 quake hit at a depth of 87 km at the epicentre around 2 PM local time. Meanwhile, the 6.0-magnitude earthquake was one of the aftershocks of magnitudes 3.9, 4.0, 6.1, 3.8, 3.2, all at depths above 10 km in the country, according to BMKG.
The series of earthquakes was unleashed just a few days after the tropical typhoon Seroja triggered floods and landslides, killing at least 138 in the country. Hundreds were displaced and rendered homeless.
Tremors and volcanic eruptions are common in the Asian country due to the geographical peculiarities of Indonesia. Nearly 4,300 people died or were reported missing following a 7.5 magnitude tremor on Sulawesi Island in 2018.
In 2004, a 9.1 magnitude tremor near Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed around 200,000 people.
