Annapolis: At least three people have been killed and three others injured in a mass shooting in Annapolis, Maryland just 30 miles outside United States Capitol Hill, Fox News reported on Sunday.

Annapolis police Chief Ed Jackson said that suspect was arrested, adding that shooting took place in the 1000 block of Paddington Place of the capital city of the state.

The report further said that there was an exchange of gunfire alongside the fatal attacks.

It was initially reported that one person died but police later put the toll at three.

Meanwhile, people in the area told media that a graduation party was happening nearby when the shooting took place.

However it is yet to be probed if the shooting had in some way to do with the event.

The police said that one person was taken to trauma care, while conditions of other injured are not known.

Annapolis police allayed fears of public stating that there is no further threat to people.

‘My message to the community is this wasn't a random act of violence,’ police Chief Ed Jackson reportedly said.

Media reports said there were several police cars in the south of the city's centre near the waterfront, the location of Sunday’s shooting.

Chief Jackson told reporters at the scene that a ‘person of interest’ was in custody alongside seizing a weapon.

State Senator Sarah Elfreth took to Facebook saying that ‘Our community experienced a tragedy beyond words this evening."

‘Multiple fatalities and injuries are reported. A suspect is in custody and police are communicating that there is no broader threat to the public. Please keep the family and the first responders of the Annapolis Police Department & Annapolis Fire Department in your thoughts tonight,’ Elfreth reportedly said.
