A fire at a New Delhi data centre operated by ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India and Tata Communications caused extensive damage to parts of the facility, complicating data recovery efforts, according to a company letter reviewed by Reuters.

The fire broke out on June 5 at the STT facility.

Tata Communications said it activated business continuity measures to minimise service disruptions and later informed clients that the severity of the damage was delaying restoration efforts.

"Despite our ongoing best efforts to recover the data, the severity of the damage presents significant challenges to the recovery of the affected data and systems," the company said in a June 15 letter to client Matrix Cellular.

Delhi fire authorities said the fire originated in lithium battery units, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Matrix Cellular said it is struggling to recover more than 20 years of operational data, while internet service provider R2 Net estimated losses of around $2 million due to the outage.

The incident also affected Google Cloud services in India. Google said a fire at a third-party data centre forced an emergency shutdown of networking equipment and, in an update on June 23, warned that some users could continue to experience latency issues until the facility is fully restored.
