Starlink says India pricing was a glitch, service still needs approval
text_fieldsStarlink stated that the prices displayed on its India website were the result of a technical error.
The company has not yet launched its services in India and is still awaiting final government approval.
The company’s India webpage briefly showed the cost of its Residential plan. Subscription price was listed as Rs 8600 per month. The website also showed hardware priced at Rs 34000. It mentioned unlimited data and a 30-day trial.
These details were later removed.
Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Business Operations at Starlink, said on X that the India website is not live.
She said that service pricing for customers in India has not been announced. She also said that Starlink is not taking orders in the country. Dreyer explained that dummy test data was displayed for a short time because of a configuration glitch. She said that the reported prices do not reflect the final cost of the service in India.
Starlink received a licence from the Department of Telecommunications in July. The licence allows the company to operate and use its satellites for commercial services for five years. It was the third firm to receive approval after OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
The government has not yet allocated spectrum to Starlink. Without spectrum, the company cannot start commercial services.
Dreyer said that Starlink is waiting for final approvals before turning on the service and making the website live.
