OpenAI adds “take-a-break” prompts to ChatGPT, aims to curb emotional over-reliance

OpenAI has begun rolling out a new safety feature in ChatGPT that nudges users to step away from the screen during exceptionally long exchanges.

The pop-up messages — described by the company as “gentle reminders” — are designed to encourage healthier digital habits and reduce the risk of users forming unhealthy emotional attachments to the AI assistant.

“Instead of measuring success by time spent or clicks, we care more about whether you leave the product having done what you came for,” OpenAI wrote in a recent blog post.

During extended sessions, a notice such as “Just Checking In. You’ve been chatting for a while. Is this a good time for a break?” will appear, giving users the option to tap “Keep Chatting” or “This Was Helpful” to pause.

The change follows reports — including a June investigation by The New York Times — indicating that some people have begun treating ChatGPT as a confidant, sometimes even adopting unrealistic beliefs when the system affirms or flatters them.

OpenAI says the break prompts, together with other forthcoming updates, are intended to keep conversations constructive and grounded.

Among those upcoming tweaks: when users ask questions that revolve around major life decisions — such as whether to end a relationship — the bot will no longer hand back a blunt verdict. Instead, ChatGPT will respond by outlining possible options, prompting self-reflection, and weighing pros and cons.

“We also know that AI can feel more responsive and personal than prior technologies, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress. To us, helping you thrive means being there when you’re struggling, helping you stay in control of your time, and guiding — not deciding — when you face personal challenges,” OpenAI noted.

In parallel, the company says it is refining systems that detect signs of mental distress so answers remain “honest and informed.”

The time-out reminders will gradually be fine-tuned, OpenAI added, so they feel organic rather than disruptive as ChatGPT continues edging into day-to-day life.
