OpenAI explores dropping AGI clause to strengthen Microsoft partnership
text_fieldsOpenAI is reportedly in discussions to remove a clause from its agreements with Microsoft that restricts the tech giant’s access to its most advanced models upon the achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
According to a report by the Financial Times, the move is part of OpenAI's strategy to attract further investments and strengthen its partnership with Microsoft.
Currently, OpenAI’s terms state that Microsoft would lose access to any AGI technology developed by the start-up. AGI is defined as a "highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work." This provision, outlined in OpenAI’s corporate structure, was originally included to prevent potential misuse of AGI for purely commercial purposes.
However, OpenAI is now exploring the possibility of removing this restriction, enabling Microsoft to maintain access to all OpenAI technologies even after AGI is achieved. This adjustment would likely encourage further investment from Microsoft, which has already invested heavily in OpenAI's growth and development.
Discussions about the AGI clause are ongoing, and no final decision has been made, according to sources cited by the Financial Times. Removing the clause would mark a significant shift in OpenAI's approach to managing its advanced technologies and its partnership with Microsoft.
In recent months, OpenAI has signaled an evolving strategy.
In September, reports emerged that the company was considering restructuring its core business into a for-profit benefit corporation, potentially reducing oversight by its non-profit board. The clause under consideration currently gives the non-profit board authority to determine when AGI has been achieved and safeguards ownership of the technology.
Microsoft, a key backer of OpenAI, stands to benefit significantly if the clause is removed. The two companies have collaborated closely, with Microsoft integrating OpenAI’s models into its services and platforms. OpenAI’s reported decision could secure more substantial investments and deepen their collaboration.
In October, OpenAI completed a funding round that raised $6.6 billion, bringing its valuation to $157 billion. The removal of the AGI clause could make OpenAI an even more attractive prospect for existing and future investors.
