Meta to track employee keystrokes, mouse activity to train AI models

Meta plans to install tracking software on employees’ work computers to monitor mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes as part of efforts to improve its artificial intelligence models, according to an internal memo.
The tool, called Model Capability Initiative, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, will operate on a set of approved workplace apps and websites. It may also capture occasional snapshots of content displayed on employee screens.
The company said the data will be used to train AI systems to better understand how humans interact with computers, including tasks such as navigating menus and using keyboard shortcuts.
A Meta spokesperson said the goal is to provide real-world examples that help AI agents perform everyday digital tasks more effectively. The company added that safeguards are in place to protect sensitive information and that the data will not be used for other purposes.
The move comes as Meta expands its internal AI push. In a separate memo, Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth said the company will increase data collection under its “AI for Work” initiative, now rebranded as Agent Transformation Accelerator.
Bosworth said the long-term vision is to build systems where AI agents handle most tasks, with humans focusing on oversight and improvement.
The development also follows reports that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is investing heavily in AI while preparing to cut about 10 percent of Meta’s global workforce, or roughly 8,000 jobs, in an initial round of layoffs.
The planned reductions would mark the company’s largest job cuts since its 2022 and 2023 restructuring, when it eliminated about 21,000 roles as part of a cost-cutting drive.
