Google to allow users to change primary Gmail address linked to accounts
text_fieldsGoogle has announced a new feature that will allow users to change the primary Gmail address linked to their Google Account, removing the need to create an entirely new account if they no longer prefer their old email address.
The update is expected to benefit users who created their accounts years ago and now want an address that better reflects their professional identity.
In a blog post, Google said the ability to change a Google Account email address is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to all users immediately. The company added that the feature will allow users to modify an address ending with gmail.com and replace it with another gmail.com address. According to an Android Authority report, the feature is likely to reach select users in 2026.
The email address linked to a Google Account is used to sign in across Google services and is visible next to a user’s name and profile photo. With this update, Google is removing earlier restrictions that prevented users from changing an existing Gmail address.
To check availability, users can visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email, sign in, click on Personal Information, select Google Account email address, and then choose the option to change the email if it appears. If the option is not visible, the feature is not yet available for that account.
Google has cautioned that changing a Gmail address may cause temporary issues across some services. Features such as Sign in with Google, access to third party apps, Chromebook settings, and Chrome Remote Desktop may be affected. Some app preferences could also reset.
The company advised users to back up their data before making the change, noting that switching Gmail addresses can feel similar to signing in on a new device.
