Google is reportedly developing a new "AI Mode" for its search platform, introducing a conversational interface to enhance query handling.

According to reports, this feature will allow users to receive contextual information, access related webpages, and ask follow-up questions. This functionality is distinct from the existing AI Overviews, which generate brief summaries of search topics.

According to the tech publication The Information, the AI Mode interface will closely resemble the web version of Google’s Gemini chatbot. The integration may be part of Google’s strategy to expand Gemini’s reach, leveraging its search engine to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which boasts significantly higher user engagement. While Gemini was estimated to have 42 million active users in October, OpenAI’s chatbot recently surpassed 300 million weekly active users, according to CEO Sam Altman.

To address this gap, Google is reportedly positioning AI Mode prominently within its Search interface, alongside the familiar “All,” “Images,” and “Videos” tabs. Users accessing the AI Mode will enter an interface similar to Gemini’s web client, where they can view in-depth contextual information, URLs, and related content while interacting through text or voice commands for a hands-free experience.

Google’s new feature is expected to improve search performance and user engagement by providing a more dynamic and interactive search experience. However, the company has not confirmed when AI Mode will officially launch.
