Paris: A group of industry chiefs and experts warned that global leaders should work on reducing "the risk of extinction" from artificial intelligence technology. They also said that it should be prioritised alongside other risks like pandemics and nuclear war.

The one-line statement was signed by dozens of specialists including Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI that created ChatGPT. "Tackling the risks from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war." After the overnight success of ChatGPT, many critics and industry insiders have raised alarm.

Academics and specialists from companies including Google and Microsoft have signed the statement.

Some of the common concerns are that AI can flood the internet with misinformation and fake news, biased algorithms, racist material, changing the job market drastically, and deep fake visuals.

Many experts have also expressed concern that humans will lose control over superintelligent machines and it will lead to disastrous consequences for the human race as well as the planet. Altman is currently touring the world talking about AI to help shape global conversations around the new tool. "If something goes wrong with AI, no gas mask is going to help you," he said in Paris.
