DeepSeek to brief UN Security Council on AI risks

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek will join other artificial intelligence companies in briefing the United Nations Security Council this week on the risks posed by AI, as the 15-member body prepares to discuss AI and global security on Wednesday.
DeepSeek and other Chinese AI companies, including Moonshot, have been invited to address the meeting.
DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to attend, although the arrangements could change.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also expected to address the meeting, while diplomats said senior representatives from Anthropic are likely to participate.
The meeting comes weeks after prominent AI figures called for a coordinated pause in the development of increasingly powerful AI systems, warning that the technology could eventually surpass human oversight and operate autonomously.
The Security Council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, held its first meeting on AI risks in 2023. China warned at the time against allowing the technology to spiral out of control, while the US raised concerns about AI being used to suppress or silence people.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last week warned world leaders that the rapid development of AI presents risks that cannot be overlooked. US President Donald Trump has argued that existing safeguards are adequate and that uncertainty around AI development could benefit China.
Chinese state media have rejected calls to slow AI development, describing them as part of a “Cold War playbook” aimed at maintaining US leadership in advanced technology and excluding China from global AI governance.
Chinese AI executives have generally been less vocal than their US counterparts about the potential for increasingly capable AI systems to deceive humans, escape control or cause catastrophic harm.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that senior US and Chinese officials had agreed to continue discussions on AI safety following their meeting ahead of talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later this week.
