Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva captured her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the French Open women's singles final.

The 19-year-old, ranked eighth in the world, became the youngest player to win the French Open women's title since Monica Seles, who won her third consecutive Roland Garros crown at age 18 in 1992.

Andreeva sealed victory with a backhand cross-court winner on her first championship point before dropping to her knees in celebration on the clay at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Chwalinska, ranked 114th and competing as a qualifier, was aiming to become the first qualifier to win the French Open women's singles title. Despite strong support from Polish fans, she was unable to overcome Andreeva's power and consistency in windy conditions.

The final marked the first Grand Slam final appearance for both players.

Andreeva has been regarded as one of tennis' brightest prospects since her breakthrough at the 2023 Madrid Open, where she reached the quarterfinals at just 15 years old. She has continued to compete under neutral status without the Russian flag due to the war in Ukraine.

Her path to the title included a semifinal victory over Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, who did not shake hands with Andreeva after the match, reflecting a practice followed by many Ukrainian players competing against Russian opponents since 2022.

The French Open title also surpasses the achievement of Andreeva's coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who finished runner-up at Roland Garros in 2000.

In men's doubles, top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos successfully defended their title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with the men's singles final between Alexander Zverev and Flavio Cobolli.
