Mexico roar into World Cup with 2-0 win over South Africa

Mexico City: Mexico launched their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in a fiery opener at a sold-out Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

Julian Quiñones opened the scoring to give the hosts an early lead, repeatedly troubling South Africa’s defense with his pace and movement. After the break, South Africa were reduced to 10 men when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity on Brian Gutiérrez. The dismissal swung control firmly in Mexico’s favour.

Veteran Raul Jiménez converted Mexico’s second, sealing the win and setting off scenes of celebration among home supporters. South Africa’s fightback hopes were further dented when Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct, leaving Bafana Bafana with nine men.

Late in stoppage time, Mexico’s César Montes received a straight red for a reckless challenge, leaving the match to finish with 19 players on the field. Despite the late controversy, Mexico’s composed display and decisive finishing provided the perfect start for the co-hosts.

Quiñones impressed with a match-defining display, while Jiménez’s experience delivered the crucial finishing touch as El Tri claimed three points in front of an electric Azteca crowd.
