El Salvador: FIFA has penalised the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) over racist and discriminatory behaviour by fans during El Salvador’s World Cup qualifying match against Suriname.
According to FESFUT, the world football body has ordered a fine of $62,715, which must be directed towards an already approved anti-discrimination programme.
FIFA has also ruled that the national team’s next official home game will be played with at least 15% of the stadium capacity closed, particularly in the stands behind the goals.
The federation explained in a statement that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee had communicated the sanctions following incidents of racist abuse and discriminatory gestures during the September 8 match between El Salvador and Suriname at the Cuscatlan Stadium, AFP reported.
FESFUT stressed that it strongly condemns any form of racism or discrimination and pledged to continue working with FIFA, CONCACAF, and other governing bodies to promote an atmosphere of respect, equality, and unity in Salvadoran football.
El Salvador, coached by Colombian Hernán “Bolillo” Gómez, currently sits second in Group A of the qualifiers with three points, behind Suriname on four. Panama and Guatemala trail with two and one point, respectively.
El Salvador is scheduled to host Panama on October 10 and face Guatemala four days later.
