Defending champion Elena Rybakina loses to Ons Jabeur, out of Wimbledon
text_fieldsLondon: Tunisian player Ons Jabeur defeated defending champion Elena Rybakina in today's quarter-final match at Wimbledon. The match was highly anticipated because Jabeaur lost the final last year to Elena.
The Tunisian sixth seed showcased her resilience and skill as she came from behind to secure a hard-fought victory and advance to the semi-finals. The intense contest took place on Centre Court and ended with Jabeur prevailing 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-1, reported AFP.
Jabeur expressed her satisfaction and acknowledged the challenge of facing an opponent with a strong serve. She said, "I'm very happy with the performance. A lot of emotion out there, especially playing someone that serves really well. It's frustrating to return, but I'm glad I did everything, shouted, got angry, then got calm and focused, and hopefully, I can manage my emotions like this for the next two matches."
The match began with Rybakina taking an early lead, breaking Jabeur's serve to love in the fourth game. However, the Tunisian swiftly responded, breaking back to level the score at 6-6. Jabeur seized an opportunity when Rybakina hit a loose volley at the net, allowing her to break once again and take a 6-5 lead. She failed to capitalise on the advantage, and Rybakina forced a tie-break, ultimately claiming the first set.
In the second set, both players showcased their resilience. Rybakina fended off break points, demonstrating her determination, while Jabeur dug deep on her serves to secure a 3-2 lead. The set remained tightly contested until the 10th game when Rybakina succumbed to pressure, allowing Jabeur to level the match.
The deciding set witnessed Jabeur's ascendancy as she surged to a commanding 3-0 lead. She showcased her mental fortitude by saving two break points and extending her lead to 4-1. With her confidence soaring, Jabeur delivered a powerful backhand down the line, securing another break of serve. She held her own serve with conviction to seal the victory, unleashing a roar of delight.
Jabeur is now up for a semi-final clash against Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Both players will vie for a coveted spot in the final, eager to etch their names in Wimbledon history.
