Dharamshala: Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75 powered Mumbai Indians to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Thursday, as MI chased down 201 with one ball to spare.

Sent in, Punjab posted 200 for 8 in their 20 overs, anchored by Prabhsimran Singh’s 57 and a late, rapid 38 from Azmatullah Omarzai. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai with figures of 4 for 39, while Deepak Chahar claimed 2 for 36.

Chasing a challenging total, Mumbai began cautiously. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma added only 13 in the first two overs before Rickelton seized the initiative, attacking Marco Jansen and racing to 48 off 23 balls. His quick-fire Powerplay assault included four fours and as many sixes and helped MI reach 59 without loss in six overs. Rickelton fell to Omarzai in the seventh over, and Naman Dhir’s brief cameo ended at nine off Jansen.

Rohit struggled for rhythm and was bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal for 25 off 26. With two quick wickets down, Tilak Varma took charge. He rotated strike well and punished loose deliveries, bringing up a rapid fifty off 25 balls and ending unbeaten on 75 (6 fours, 6 sixes). Varma’s pivotal moment came with a mammoth 106-metre six off Chahal. Sherfane Rutherford provided support with 20 before Omarzai dismissed him in the 17th over.

Will Jacks finished the chase with a brisk 25 off 10, as Mumbai reached 205 for 5 in 19.5 overs.

Punjab had started cautiously, with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran taking time to adjust to a pitch that offered some assistance to bowlers. Priyansh fell to Chahar for 22, and Prabhsimran accelerated to a 29-ball fifty, finishing with 57 (6 fours, 4 sixes) before Shardul removed him. Cooper Connolly made 21, while Shardul’s 4 for 39 helped stifle the middle overs.

A late fireworks display from Omarzai — four sixes in a 17-ball 38 — propelled Punjab past 200. Xavier Bartlett’s unbeaten 18 and a cameo from Vishnu Vinod helped set a formidable target, but Varma’s match-winning knock ensured Mumbai completed the chase.

Brief scores: Punjab Kings 200/8 (Prabhsimran Singh 57, Azmatullah Omarzai 38; Shardul Thakur 4-39, Deepak Chahar 2-36) lost to Mumbai Indians 205/5 (Tilak Varma 75*, Ryan Rickelton 48; Azmatullah Omarzai 2-36, Yuzvendra Chahal 1-32) by 6 wickets.
