New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar's record test runs will remain insurmountable, says former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar, who is known to be one of the best opening batsman of all time, did not rule out English cricketer Joe Root breaking Sachin's record.

Tendulkar sits the top of the chart with 15921 runs followed by Ricky Ponting's 13378 runs, according to India Today.

Others to follow them include Jacques Kallis with 13,289 runs and Rahul Dravid at 13,288.

The English cricketer Joe Root who plays for the England Test and One Day International (ODI) teams has recently gone past 10000 mark bagging 10191 runs.

With this whopping runs in his name, Joe Root emerges as the possible challenger to Sachin's record.

However, Sunil Gavaskar is of the view that Sachin's numbers are as yet insurmountable but he does not rule out Root overcoming it someday.

In order to topple Sachin's record, Root will have to gain 6000 runs which means scoring 1000 or 800 runs over the next 8 years, India Today quoted him as saying.

The 31-year-old, according to Gavaskar, is certain to break the record provided he maintains the enthusiasm.

Citing examples of New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee and West Indies Courtney Walsh, Gavaskar said anything is possible.
