India's comprehensive victory over Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series has propelled the team to the number one spot in the ICC Men's ODI Rankings, effectively making them the top team across all formats of cricket, including ODI, T20I, and Test cricket.

The triumph in Mohali on Friday was characterised by a brilliant performance from Mohammed Shami, who showcased his crafty bowling skills with figures of 5 for 51, underlining his prowess as a skilled bowler. Australia, batting first at India's request, was limited to a total of 276.

In response, Shubman Gill played a pivotal role with his elegant and poised innings, contributing a 63-ball 74. He formed a crucial opening partnership worth 142 runs with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 71 off 77 balls. This partnership laid the foundation for India's victory, which, although appearing challenging on paper, was achieved comfortably in 48.4 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav (50 off 49 balls) and skipper KL Rahul (58 not out off 63 balls) also made significant contributions to India's successful chase. The only setbacks for India were the dismissals of Shreyas Iyer (3) and Ishan Kishan (18).

Shami's exceptional performance with the ball played a pivotal role in restricting Australia to a modest total. His five-wicket haul showcased his abilities and also placed considerable pressure on Shardul Thakur, who struggled and went wicketless while conceding 78 runs in his 10 overs.

Australia's batting was characterised by starts from David Warner (52 off 53 balls), Steve Smith (41 off 60 balls), and Marnus Labuschagne (39 off 49 balls), but none of them could convert their innings into substantial scores. The lack of substantial partnerships and occasional miscommunication on the field added to Australia's challenges.

Ravichandran Ashwin, despite an initial rusty spell, played a significant role with the ball, taking 1 for 47 in his 10 overs. Shami's brilliance, particularly in his second spell, was the turning point of the match. He dismissed Smith with a sharp in-cutter that resulted in an inside edge onto the stumps. His ability to swing and seam the ball made a significant impact on the game.

India's victory in the first ODI against Australia not only secured their top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Rankings but also showcased the team's formidable batting and bowling capabilities.
