Former world number one Angelique Kerber announced her withdrawal from US Open saying she is pregnant. She jokingly said that "two against one is not a fair competition."

The 34-year-old added that Flushing Meadow holds great memories for her. It is where she won the title in 2016 and became world number one.

She wrote: "I really wanted to play the US Open but eventually I decided that two against one just isn't a fair competition." The German player further said she will be taking a break from travelling the globe as a tennis player. "But then again, I believe it is for the best possible reason!"

"New York has often been a turning point in my career and it feels like this year will be no different in some way," she added. Addressing the break in her career, she tweeted: "Being a professional athlete means everything to me but I'm grateful for the new path I'm heading to. To be honest, I'm nervous and excited at the same time."

Kerber is currently ranked 52.

The athlete restarted her career in 2011 ranked 92 and reached the semi-finals. In five years, she won the title and became no.1 in the world. She also won the 2016 Australian Open and 2018 Wimbledon.
