India's first privately developed rocket Vikram-S conquered skies today promising greater role for private sector in India's space research.

The rocket developed by Skyroot Aerospace, successfully lifted off from the spaceport in Sriharikota, about 115 kms from Chennai.

The mission, named 'Prarambh' marks as reports say a divergent path for space research in India completely dominated by state-run Isro.

The rocket launched at around 11.30 am achieved the peak apogee of 89 km against the required target of 80 km.

"This is a new beginning for the private sector as it enters the space sector," said Dr Pawan Kumar Goenka, chairman, IN-SPACe added that the launch of Vikram-S is "milestone".

The launch of privately built rocket comes two years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the space sector for private players in June 2020.
