Emirati filmmaker captures women fishers in the Indian Ocean
text_fieldsRenowned Emirati filmmaker Nahla Al Fahad is directing a new documentary that tells the story of women fishers in the Indian Ocean. The film, the first of its kind by an Emirati director, follows their daily lives for an entire year and shows their strength in facing the sea and its many challenges.
Shot in the rough and unpredictable waters of the Indian Ocean, the documentary shows the dangers faced by these women, from frequent cyclones to changing climate patterns. Nahla herself filmed at sea despite the risks, saying the women she met showed an unshakable spirit as they worked hard to support their families and protect their way of life.
Covering the changing seasons, the film gives a close look at how these women balance tradition with modern life while also dealing with rising economic pressures and the impact of climate change. It captures their practical skills, creativity and ability to adapt to tough conditions, giving audiences a rare view of their hard work.
The project is produced by Beyond Studios, with Sarinlal as executive producer and is supported by Sony’s latest visual technology and Sennheiser’s sound systems. It is co-directed by Jibin Jose, with Rajesh James as Creative Director. Sunil K. S., widely praised for his cinematography in Adujeevitham, is the Director of Photography.
This documentary stands as a powerful tribute to the courage of women fishers. It also marks a major milestone for UAE cinema, as the first Emirates film set in the Indian Ocean. The project is expected to draw international attention to their stories and spark conversations on climate change, gender and economic survival.
