Dubai Municipality launches insect residue testing lab at Gulfood 2026
text_fieldsDubai Municipality is using its participation at Gulfood 2026 to present new food safety technologies, including the launch of a specialised laboratory to detect insect residues in food products.
The municipality is taking part in the 31st edition of the Gulf Food Exhibition, being held at Dubai World Trade Centre from January 26 to 30, where it is showcasing digital services and regulatory initiatives linked to food trade and safety.
The newly launched laboratory, developed by Dubai Central Laboratory, is dedicated to the detection of insect residues and is equipped with advanced testing instruments and specialised tools. The facility is designed to deliver rapid and precise results and operates in line with international food safety standards.
Among the projects on display is the Laboratory Gateway initiative, which provides simplified scientific content aimed at improving public understanding of food safety across different segments of society.
Visitors are also being introduced to the Microscopic Exploration Unit, which uses advanced laboratory technologies, including robotic arms for sample preparation and virus testing. The unit features Rashid Robot, an interactive guide that explains laboratory processes and digital services.
In food safety operations, Dubai Municipality is presenting smart inspection tools, including the use of smart glasses that allow inspectors to carry out digital and remote inspections at ports, warehouses and food establishments. The system reduces on-site requirements while maintaining inspection accuracy and compliance.
The municipality is also highlighting the Montaji+ system, a unified digital platform regulating imported and exported products. The system integrates food, health and safety requirements and includes a database of more than 1.5 million registered products to support monitoring and trade facilitation.
Montaji+ was developed following benchmarking with more than 12 regional and international entities and covers registration, import and export services within a single digital framework.
Also on display is Ghalia, an AI-powered virtual assistant that provides guidance on food safety and school nutrition regulations, offering instant support to students, parents and food suppliers.
Dr Naseem Mohammed Rafee, Acting CEO of the Environment, Health and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, said Gulfood provides an important platform for sharing expertise and developments within the global food and beverage sector.
