Dubai launches commercial driverless taxi Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah
text_fieldsDubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started commercial operations of autonomous taxis in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, expanding the emirate’s push towards smart mobility.
The service is being introduced in partnership with Apollo Go and WeRide, with bookings available through the Uber and Apollo Go applications.
Passengers interact with the vehicle through onboard touchscreens that provide trip instructions and allow control of features such as air conditioning and route tracking. Journeys begin only after safety steps, including fastening seat belts, are completed.
The vehicles are designed to carry up to three passengers with luggage space and include features such as heated seating and additional comfort options.
During operation, the taxis navigate without a human driver, using artificial intelligence, sensors and high-definition mapping to follow traffic rules, maintain lanes and adjust speed based on surrounding conditions.
Authorities said the system has been tested extensively to ensure safe performance in real traffic environments.
The rollout forms part of Dubai’s broader strategy to introduce self-driving transport, with officials citing goals such as improved road safety, reduced human error and more efficient mobility.
Initial deployment includes a fleet of around 100 autonomous vehicles in the first phase, with further expansion expected in the coming years.
