Abu Dhabi University secures patent for AI-powered multilingual sign language app
text_fieldsAbu Dhabi University (ADU) has obtained a patent for “HearMe”, a multilingual application that uses artificial intelligence to translate sign language into text and speech, and vice versa, aiming to improve communication for people with hearing impairments.
The platform was developed by Dr. Modafar Ati, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at ADU, in collaboration with alumna Reem Al Bostami, who completed her Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at the university.
HearMe supports real-time, two-way translation by converting hand gestures into written words and turning typed text into animated sign language. It is designed for use in classrooms, training settings and workplaces, where communication barriers often limit participation.
The system also enables translation across multiple sign languages, including American and French systems, allowing users from different regions to communicate more effectively.
The project aligns with the UAE’s National Policy for Empowering People of Determination, which focuses on reducing inequality, improving access and strengthening digital inclusion.
Dr. Ati said the goal was to develop a tool that addresses practical challenges faced by people with hearing impairments, particularly in education and professional environments. He added that the patent reflects the university’s focus on applied research tied to national priorities.
ADU said the application is intended to expand access to higher education and professional training, while supporting more inclusive learning environments and broader career opportunities.
